kasa
I’m an artist based in Cape Town, South Africa called helo samo and have been creating solo
sound works under the title “kasa” since 2003. Creating sound and trying to capture it has
always been a raw, DIY experience out of necessity due to the lack of resources and no
formal training. I consider my work to be eclectic, drawing influences from, punk, shoe gaze,
atmospheric drone, noise, folk, doom, drone, metal, hip-hop, glitch and orchestra to name a
few, while always being attracted to the artists with a darker and somber audio sensibility.
I’m a member of Morning Pages (2014 – present, with Caitlin Mkhasibe & Frank Lunar) – an
atmospheric, post-rock, post-metal, noise, doom, drone band. As part of the underground
scene, Morning Pages has played and recorded live at different venues and events in South
Africa since 2014, notably, VANSA funded ‘White Curtains’ moving exhibition (curated by
Valerie Geselev), Edge of Wrong festivals, ‘White Room Sessions’ at Sound and Motion
Studios, SAE Institute, the Alexander Theatre, Theatre Arts Admin Collective, Michaelis
School of Fine Art (UCT), Gallery University Stellenbosch, Manilla Bar, ROAR and Mercury.
Morning Pages independently recorded and released their debut album in 2016, titled,
Vernal Equinox, which launched live at Bright Day Studio before it was toured up the east
coast of South Africa.
